Castles are hothouses of history. At their height, these magnificent, fortified homes were at the centre of major events and packed to the turrets with life.

Rulers used the classic medieval castle to defend territory, stash riches and house their people. To defend them, the royals, lords and ladies depended on knights and soldiers, and they also needed another army of servants, cooks and all kinds of craftspeople to maintain their cushy lifestyle.

However, things could get pretty grisly once they were under siege. As angry enemies hung around outside, there was no nipping out to Aldi. Desperate castle-dwellers could be holed up for months with nothing allowed in or out…
